Rookie Blue – The One That Got Away

Tonight’s big case was a serial killer from Luke’s past and the (as it turns out) copycat that attempted to kill his neighbour. At the beginning of the episode, McNally and Luke have a brief conversation (and when I say conversation I mean that she talks and he takes orders) about what they should be saying to people about their split. Basically she wants to hide it. At the end of the episode, you see her confess to Nash what really happened. I found this full circle of lies to the truth to be a refreshingly clever addition. Other than the case and the McNally et al business, there wasn’t anything else of note happening, so there are only two headings for the episode, and as always, they are SPOILER heavy.

The McNally-Luke-Jo-Swarek Quadrangle

Jo is such a narcissistic bitch. A relationship was destroyed. Two people are hurting. And her big concern is herself. As if that’s a woman any man should want to be with. She’s the type of woman that gives the rest of us a bad name. And making us hate her even more, Jo is unnecessarily bitchy to McNally and note that Swarek gives Jo his best if-looks-could-kill-you’d-be-dead look. Very sexy, both the look and the sentiment. That moment with the pizzas when McNally listens to Luke’s thoughts about the case and believes him, it’s the turning point in the case and what gives him hope for salvaging their relationship because it’s ultimately what motivates her to ignore Jo’s orders and go off on her own. But does she do it because she believes in him as a cop, because she still loves him or because she feels sorry for him? They’re really stacking up obstacles against a McNally-Luke reunion. I like that Swarek is both covering for McNally with Jo and being hostile toward her. It’s no less than she deserves and someone should be giving her what she deserves. Not that I’m letting Luke off the hook, because I’m not. The fact that he turns her away and basically tells her not to let the door hit her on the ass on her way really goes a long way to getting me to like him again. Still a long way to go though.

The Case of the Serial Killer & the Wannabe Copycat

A rookie was killed on this case three years ago and it’s stuck with Luke. Was he sleeping with that one too I wonder? Pretty sure that’s when he was with Jo though so probably not. They know (or are pretty sure) who the killer was but were unable to make it stick at the time and are hoping for a second bite at the apple. Turns out it was a copycat, that the neighbour decided it was a good time to try and attack the chick next door. Certainly vindicates Luke and makes McNally’s discovery in the storage locker pivotal to the success of the case. McNally calls Luke when she finds Ray’s stash, but then Ray finds her. Will Luke save her in time and what will it mean for their relationship when it does? I say when because quite frankly – TV writers pay attention here – that sort of cliffhanger mentality doesn’t translate well for part way through a regular season episode, so save that stuff for season finales or the Christmas mid-season hiatus. The grossest kind of serial killer, one that is proud of his work, but more of them than we think are of this persuasion and that’s ultimately what helps to put them away.

And that’s my Rookie Blue 2¢ for today.
